DeVotchKa Draws on German Piano Classics

DeVotchKa is a versatile quartet that draws on Eastern European, Mexican, Gypsy and German piano and folk music classics to create their unique sound. Their latest album, "100 Lovers", bears all the traits of the group's best work. Their technical performance is spotless, and on this album they are backed up by a full orchestra. Their music is at times romantic, yet never without wit and energy.

As a teen, the lead singer Mr. Ursata would experiment with his own compositions in New York subway stations before moving to more formal settings. "It was always trial and error" he said, and his voice took a long time to develop. He met his band-mates in Denver, and DeVotchKa was born. Their first album released in 2000, and has since rotated members many times. Each member plays several instruments on various compositions throughout the album.
